My Teachers and Their Lessons

I have been taught,
by the minority who know names,
of trees and birds, who care for fields.
Stewards, those passing through.

The long cycle of handing on
turns fully at their auction,
the dispersal. Sheds cleared,
Dead stock* hauled into rows.

Starting with scrap, ending with tractors
crusher, hurdles, cratches,
topper, tedder and handy little baler.
all passed on to make a pension.
